Is Sedation Dentistry the Right Option for Me?

It's normal to question whether sedation dentistry is right for you. That's why our approachable and communicative dental team is here to break down what our sedation options entail and answer any questions you may have about them. You can rest assured that we'll give you the information you need to make informed and confident decisions about what's best for your smile. Some of the benefits of our Brentwood sedation dentistry include:

  • Anxiety relief: No matter how nervous you may be about the thought of root canal therapy, sedation dentistry can eliminate your fear and allow your smile to get the care it needs. Our hope is that our sedation options help each dental appointment feel easier than the last.
  • Reducing your gag reflex: Your gag reflex is a good thing as it prevents foreign bodies from entering your throat. Our endodontist, however, will need access to your oral cavity, and your gag reflux may prevent it. Through sedation dentistry, your gag reflex will be less of a problem.
  • Quicker dental work: When a patient is fully conscious during root canal therapy, they may move around in the chair and force the dentist to stop periodically. Root canal sedation allows our endodontist to work faster and more efficiently as you move and adjust yourself less.

Our Root Canal Sedation Options

Our dental team will ask you various questions when you come in for your initial appointment. Do you normally experience anxiety when visiting the dentist? Have you ever undergone root canal treatment before? Our endodontist and their team will then use the information you provide us to determine which of our sedation options to recommend for you. Factors like the overall complexity of your oral situation and the intensity of your dental anxiety all play a part in deciding the ideal type for you.

Our excellent root canal sleep dentistry options include:

  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation: Nitrous oxide sedation, also called laughing gas, is a popular sedation option for routine and complex root canal therapy alike. This sedation option consists of a clear and scentless gas. Normally, the gas is administered through a nosepiece placed over your nose. You'll be awake and responsive during the procedure but pain sensation is substantially reduced, and you'll feel more relaxed. Our highly trained staff will closely monitor you during your root canal procedure to ensure that you're comfortable and okay. Once the dentist is complete, we'll flush oxygen through your system to remove any remaining nitrous oxide. Although you may feel a little lightheaded at first, nitrous oxide doesn't linger in the body for long and you'll be okay to drive yourself back home.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation: Oral conscious sedation is a more powerful type of sedation reserved for complex root canal therapy cases or patients with severe dental anxiety. Typically, oral sedation dentistry consists of a special drug administered in a pill. Our endodontist may have you take a pill the night before your appointment as well as right before your procedure to help maximize the effects. You'll more than likely feel sleepy during the procedure, but you'll still be aware of your surroundings and able to communicate. As a more potent form of sedation, it would be unsafe for you to operate machinery after your appointment, and we recommend having someone drive you home. We also recommend that you take the rest of the day off and relax while the remainder of the medication wears off.
